A
typical day in Primary Spanish
Primary
Spanish is taught entirely in Spanish. Brenda uses many props to
demonstrate the vocabulary words, so English is not necessary. The
students are able to guess the meaning of the words without having
to use translation.
The
class opens with Brenda giving the objectives for the day. In order
to immerse the students in the language, the objectives are given
in Spanish.
Each
class has a "word of the day." Several clues are given
throughout the class. The students are asked to keep track of the
clues on the board (or on paper, whichever they prefer),
and Brenda keeps track of the clues on her own "pizarra,"
or chalkboard. At the end of the class, a school is chosen to reveal
the "word of the day" via telephone.
The
actual lesson consists of learning/reviewing vocabulary with pictures,
and reinforcing the words with actual props. The props consist of
stuffed animals, puppets, real animals (when appropriate), etc.
Occasionally,
Brenda will do an art project in the class. The materials needed
are presented the class prior to actually doing the craft. The students
may follow along with Brenda and do the art project during class,
or it may be done after the class.
